I’ve been to three Olympic Games and over the course of four years, visited at least 10 different country houses. Most of these houses serve as hospitality centers for athletes, Olympic officials and their families. For the big sport countries like France, The Netherlands, and Germany, it’s an opportunity to showcase the country’s culture, business, and athletic prowess, all in one building. For France that building would be the Old Billingsgate. For Holland, which will perhaps host 100,000 people at its house during the duration of Games, that would be Alexandra Palace. Even Casa Brasil is at Somerset house in the middle of London.
Grenada house is in the basement of a social housing building, but that didn’t make it any less special or incredible. As a nation of 103,000, I really didn’t expect more. On Friday August 10, Grenada House welcomed its Olympic athletes including the 400m Gold medalist Kirani James for a public visit. More than 200 members of the Grenada community packed themselves in the basement conference center to see their home country hero, Kirani James.
